Boris Johnson’s address will begin shortly.

The PM is due set out further steps to curb the rapid rise of coronavirus cases and hospitalisations, as the UK reported its highest ever daily number of new cases, with 58,784 further infections registered.

Professor Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, has warned “we must act now or the NHS will come under even greater pressure” as the new variant causes cases to spike.
